The call is quick, easy and free, and helps to ensure public safety and avoid unnecessary injuries and expenses. "Even a small home improvement project requires you to call 811," said Southwest's Construction Superintendent Paul Krahl. "Knowing where utility lines are buried and respecting their locations helps to prevent harm to those digging and to the neighborhood, and avoids a disruption in utility services." Homeowners who hire a contractor should confirm that a call to 811 to have utility lines marked has been made and you should not allow work to begin if the lines have not been marked. Southwest Gas has an ongoing commitment to safety. Anyone who notices a hissing noise coming from the ground or an above-ground pipeline, and/or the smell of rotten eggs—even if the odor is only slight or momentary—should leave the area immediately and call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-800-867-9091 from a safe location. California residents should also make sure they have a functioning carbon monoxide alarm as required by Health and Safety Code §17926.
