Natural gas pipelines are one of the safest forms of energy transportation in the United States. At Southwest Gas, our ongoing safety programs meet or exceed all federal and state requirements for safe pipeline operation and maintenance.

A leak may be present if you:

SMELL an unusual odor, like that of rotten eggs. An odorant is added to natural gas to help discover gas leaks. A leak may be present if the odor is constant or momentary, or if the odor is strong or slight.

HEAR an unusual noise coming from the ground or an above-ground pipeline. A hissing or roaring sound may indicate escaping natural gas.

SEE discolored vegetation surrounding a pipeline, or water or dirt blowing into the air.

IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK:

  • Leave the vicinity immediately and do not use an automated door.
  • Warn others.
  • Do not light a match, start or stop an engine, use a phone, switch on or off lights, or do anything that might create a spark.
  • From a safe place, call Southwest Gas immediately, day or night; or call 911.
