PHOENIX, AZ (June 12, 2026) - Southwest Gas and Estrella Mountain Community College are strengthening Arizona’s skilled trade workforce through the college’s Natural Gas Program. Registration for the Fall 2026 semester is now open for the hands-on training program that prepares students for careers in the utility and construction industries.

As the Phoenix West Valley experiences continued residential, commercial, and industrial expansion, the need for a highly trained utility workforce continues to grow. Major advanced manufacturing, technology, and industrial projects across the region depend on reliable infrastructure and stable
energy sources, including natural gas, to support operations and long-term economic development.

A partnership with Southwest Gas and Estrella Mountain College, the Natural Gas Program helps meet that demand by providing direct pathways into high-demand careers, particularly those seeking alternatives to four-year degrees or transitioning into new fields.

“The Natural Gas Program at Estrella Mountain College reflects Southwest Gas’ commitment to the community and enriching the lives of those we serve,” said Albert Taylor, VP of Human Resources of Southwest Gas. “As the West Valley and Arizona continue to expand, programs like this help create real opportunities and direct pathways into rewarding careers for students, while equipping them with the skills to support the region’s energy infrastructure and economic growth.”

Skilled trades remain among the nation’s most in-demand career paths, and programs like this are helping develop the next generation of workers needed to support safe, reliable natural gas infrastructure and meet growing workforce demands across the utility industry. The program also reflects a growing interest among students seeking direct pathways into stable, well-paying careers outside of a traditional four-year degree path.

The program currently offers two evening courses — AIT112-Natural Gas Pipeline Operations and AIT113-Natural Gas Pipe Joiner — providing students with real-world, field-based training in pipeline operations, damage prevention, emergency response, heat fusion, pipefitting and compression techniques. Courses are taught by current Southwest Gas employees, giving students hands-on experience using the same tools and processes used in the field.

In addition to technical training, students gain exposure to a wide range of career opportunities within the utility industry, including utility operations, infrastructure maintenance, pipeline construction, engineering support, and safety-related roles, while also developing an understanding of the important role utilities play in supporting communities, economic development, and regional infrastructure.

Courses are held on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., creating flexibility for non-traditional students, adult learners, and individuals exploring career transitions. Graduates are positioned to pursue opportunities within the utility industry, including roles with Southwest Gas and its contractor partners.
