Solar Water Heating

Harness some of those ample rays and save some money in the long run.

Solar Water Heating is Easy, Clean, and Efficient

Installing a solar water heating system with natural gas back-up is not as complicated as you may think. All it takes is a solar collector and a storage tank, and you can literally soak up the sun.

Solar water heating is clean and efficient and helps save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Using the sun's energy to heat water can lower your utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint. While a solar water heating system may initially cost more than a conventional water heater, it will save you money each month with the energy it saves. In addition, customers installing qualifying solar water heating systems with natural gas back-up may be eligible to receive rebates.

WHAT IS SOLAR WATER HEATING?

Solar heating and cooling technologies collect thermal energy from the sun and use this heat to provide hot water and space heating and cooling to your home or business. In comparison, photovoltaic (PV) technologies directly convert energy from sunlight into electricity.1

Solar water heaters generate hot water for your home or business in a simple, clean, economical way. Solar water heating systems can be used in any climate, and the fuel they use – the sun – is free.

  1.     Sunlight is captured by solar collectors outside, heating liquid inside the collector.
  2.     Heat from the liquid is transferred into hot water.
  3.     The heated water is stored in an insulated tank until you need it.

Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. Most solar water heaters require a well-insulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional (back-up) water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank.
