Their goal is to trick you into giving away personal information or sending money using high-pressure tactics and threats of service disconnection. Knowing what to watch for can help you stay protected.

The approaches scammers and imposters use may vary and evolve, but typically include:
  • Overpayment Refund Scams: A claim that you have overpaid your bill and an offer of a refund requiring your bank or personal information for processing.
  • Disconnection Threats: A threat to shut off service immediately unless a payment is made.
  • Fake Utility Representative:  An unsolicited visit to your home or business that may appear to be a Southwest Gas representative, using a fake uniform, badge, and/or logo.
  • Phony Discounts or Assistance: An offer to lower your rates or help you pay off your utility bills through a customer assistance program if you pay up front or provide personal information.
  • Fake Utility Communications: A fake phone call, email, text, or social media message that appears to be from Southwest Gas, with a  link or phone number that is not Southwest Gas’.

What to Watch Out For - Image
  • A sense of urgency or threatening language to act immediately, including requests for cash payments.
  • Requests for personal information such as your Southwest Gas account number, email and password, bank accounts, credit cards, social security numbers, birth dates, and more. This may also include and individual contacting you and asking you to “confirm” information they have already learned about you.
  • Claims to be an “official” program or a non-profit that can help you.
  • Offers to help you save money and/or energy.
  • Pressure to use a hard-to-trace and recover form of payment, such as wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
  • Suspicious links or attachments with misspellings or inconsistencies.
  • In-person visits and fake logos or badges.
 
  • Be cautious with communications. When in doubt about a caller, don’t respond or hang up and contact Southwest Gas directly at 877-860-6020.
  • Do not share any personal or financial information over the phone or online unless you’re sure of who you are speaking with.
  • Never share account information or post your utility bill on social media.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening attachments in emails.
